What all consulting firms need …NOW!

I have had a unique experience within the consulting community. I hired on with a large international firm that provided C-Level business enhancement services. With over 1000 consultants in the field, this outfit could brag that they were one of the largest and most successful. Hard to argue with the revenue that they generated, but during my initial training I uncovered the reality of professional consulting.

Although frustrating, I was not surprised to learn that the vast majority of my fellow consultants had graduate degrees in tax, law and finance. I was surprised to learn that I was the only one in a group of forty that had ever sold anything to anybody. Herein lies the primary deficiency in the professional consulting industry…there are two sides to every P&L.
Not only was I ostracized for suggesting this, but was informed that even talking about it was considered heresy and I was making everyone uncomfortable. I knew from my real-life experience that the idea of austerity ,cost cutting and increased efficiency without revenue generation for a struggling business was NONSENSE.

The only reason a company hires a consultant is to increase profit….PERIOD!!!!

So how to you operate a successful consulting firm that was founded by non-entrepreneurial , accounting type, financial controlled fanatics?
That’s easy…hire a professional that can do it for you. Taking your own medicine can be difficult, but the best consulting firms know what they are good at and what they are not…and then they do something about it.

The three biggest fears of operating a consulting firm are:

  1. Finding and retaining new clients.
  2. Creating enough measurable value for my client so that they keep paying me.
  3. Keeping and motivating good consultants so they don’t steal my clients.
